Peter Nagy is an experienced IEEE leader in Region 8, with a strong track record in building communities and supporting volunteers across academia and industry.
 

STATEMENT

I am running for IEEE Region 8 Director-Elect to strengthen the value IEEE delivers to its members and to support a vibrant, connected Region 8 community.

Building on extensive IEEE leadership experience and active engagement across our diverse Region, I understand the key challenges shaping Region 8. I value teamwork, learning from each other, and sharing proven practices.

My priorities are:

  • Strengthen membership value and retention by supporting volunteers and improving the student-to-young professional transition.
  • Improve collaboration within IEEE by connecting Sections, Chapters, Affinity Groups, and Societies to share best practices.
  • Expand industry engagement and strengthen industry–academia partnerships.
  • Using data-informed operations to focus resources on high-impact activities and continuously improve programs.
  • Addressing future challenges such as AI, sustainability, and digital transformation in alignment with IEEE’s mission of advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

I will also work to better communicate IEEE’s value to the broader community and strengthen our external visibility.
Together, we can continue to build a strong and collaborative Region 8 for the future. 

  
 

BIOGRAPHY

Peter Nagy is the Operations Director at the Scientific Association for Infocommunications (HTE) in Hungary, since 2005 and has overseen more than 40 scientific and business-oriented conferences.

He has been a Senior Member of IEEE since 2021; he is a member of IEEE Communications Society, IEEE Computer Society, IEEE HKN (Eta Kappa Nu), and IEEE Women in Engineering

He holds an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Budapest University of Technology and Economics (2000). He was a State scholar at TU-Vienna, Austria (1998). He finished his MBA studies in Budapest (2005), with specialized courses from the State University of New York Buffalo (USA) and Rochester Institute of Technology (USA).

Peter serves as publisher of the Infocommunications Journal (HU ISSN2061- 2079) and was Guest Editor of IEEE Communications Magazine 2013 (Quantum Communications). He promotes high-quality Journal and Conference papers.

Peter served on the Supervisory Board of Finatech Capital Ltd, a venture capital company.

He is involved in the EU-funded Data-EDIH project, where he leads international relations supporting SME digital transformation, and has served on the Supervisory Board of a venture capital company.

  • 2016-2017 - IEEE Conference Finance Committee member led by John Barr (USA), with a main focus on Taxation (VAT, GST, sales tax) - he worked in several countries with different taxation environments
  • 2016 - member of Adhoc on Global Perspective under IEEE Conferences Committee, led by Jan Haase (Germany)
  • Mr. NAGY had presentations at IEEE Convene (2019, 2018) and IEEE Section Congress (2017, 2023)

 


In COMMUNICATIONS SOCIETY:

  • 2025-2027 Finance Committee member, this Committee is responsible for facilitating the Society's budget process and for managing and providing direction in all aspects of Society financial matters.
  • 2016-2018 GLOBECOM & ICC Management and Strategy Committee, Finance Working Group Chair - standing committee for two flagship conferences, oversee the operational preparation and management and do strategic planning
  • 2016-2017 Strategic Planning Committee, Secretary - standing committee for preparing a long-term strategic plan to guide the direction and future of the Society and for preparing short-term plans to direct specific areas, as appropriate.
  • 2016 – 2017 Sister and Related Societies Board member – a board for setting up new agreements and monitoring existing ones with National Societies.

  • As Conference Coordinator (2017-2018), Mr. NAGY represented IEEE Region 8 at Regional Conference Coordinators calls and face-to-face meetings.

IEEE Accomplishments and Activities

  • Served as IEEE Region 8 Vice-Chair Technical Activities (2021-2022), overseeing five major committees and gaining direct experience in regional governance, conference coordination, and industry, standards, and educational activities.
  • Strengthened industry-academia collaboration by expanding industry programs at Region 8 flagship conferences, hosting industry sessions at IEEE AFRICON 2023 and IEEE MELECON 2026, and in 2021 integrating IEEE RTSI into the Region 8 conference portfolio. 
    Further strengthened collaboration between the IEEE Industry Engagement Committee and Region 8, building on established relationships and sharing best practices.
  • Led the IEEE National Society Agreements Program for five years, reporting to the IEEE Board of Directors, building sustainable partnerships between IEEE and national societies worldwide, and supporting membership growth through these relationships.
  • Received the IEEE MGA Achievement Award (2023) for strengthening relationships between National Societies and IEEE and highlighting IEEE’s value in industry engagement.
  • Advanced inter-regional cooperation through roles in the IEEE Conferences Committee, contributing to initiatives such as evolving IEEE HISTELCON into a multi-regional event (2027, Canada) and increasing collaboration through joint activities and best practice sharing.
  • Enhanced conference governance and continuity by developing steering committee frameworks for Region 8 flagship conferences and serving in 2024 as founding chair of the IEEE AFRICON Region 8 Steering Committee, involving previous organizers and enabling structured knowledge transfer.
  • Supported volunteer development and recognition by mentoring volunteers, recommending candidates for leadership roles, nominating members for Region 8, MGA, and IEEE awards, and promoting a culture of recognition and progression within the Region.
  • Contributed across multiple IEEE committees, including the IEEE Conferences Committee, MGA IT Coordination and Oversight Committee, IEEE Communications Society Finance Committee, Region 8 Membership Development Committee, and Region 8 Awards and Recognition Committee, gaining broad insight into IEEE operations.
